The GE Profile Opal (and the newer Opal 2.0) isn't just another nugget ice maker โ it's built with its own cleaning system baked right in. Instead of only relying on a manual scrub-and-rinse routine, the Opal has a dedicated one-touch Clean cycle, a light ring that tells you when it's time to clean, and (on many models) a clip-on side water tank instead of a simple open reservoir. That means cleaning an Opal properly looks a little different from cleaning a generic nugget ice maker, even though the underlying goal โ clearing out mineral scale and buildup โ is the same. For the general theory on why nugget ice makers scale up and how often to clean any of them, see our general descaling guide. This guide focuses on the Opal's built-in features.
How the Opal's Clean cycle works
Most GE Profile Opal models have a built-in Clean cycle you start from the machine's controls, typically by pressing and holding the Clean button (or, on some models, the Power button) until the unit switches into cleaning mode. Once started, the Opal runs an automated routine that circulates your cleaning solution through the system, similar to how it circulates water during normal ice production, so it reaches the auger and internal lines rather than just sitting in the tank.
While the Clean cycle runs, the light ring around the base or top of the unit typically changes color or pattern to show the machine is cleaning rather than making ice โ check your model's manual for the exact color, since this varies across Opal and Opal 2.0 units. If the unit is connected to the SmartHQ app, it can send clean reminders and status notifications, so you don't have to rely on memory to know when the next descale is due.
Step-by-step: cleaning your GE Opal
- Empty the ice bin and reservoir. Remove all existing ice and pour out any standing water before you begin.
- Detach and empty the side tank. Many Opal models use a clip-on side water tank rather than a simple top-loading reservoir. Unclip it, empty it, and give it a quick rinse before refilling.
- Add cleaner and water to the tank. Use a cleaner formulated specifically for ice machines, mixed at the ratio on the label, and refill the tank with the solution.
- Start the Clean cycle. Reattach the tank and initiate the Clean cycle from the control panel. Watch for the light ring to confirm the unit has entered cleaning mode.
- Let the cycle run to completion. Don't interrupt it partway through โ the automated routine circulates the solution long enough to loosen scale from the auger and internal lines.
- Drain the system via the side drain plug. The Opal has a drain plug on the side of the unit for emptying used cleaning solution; remove it over a bucket or sink and let the system fully drain.
- Run one or two fresh-water rinse cycles. Refill the tank with plain water and run the Clean cycle (or a regular ice-making cycle) again to flush out any remaining solution. Discard this ice rather than using it.
- Wipe down and air dry. Dry the tank, bin, and accessible surfaces, and leave the lid open so the interior can air out before regular use.
Cleaning the side tank and sensor
The Opal's side tank is one of the biggest differences from a typical nugget ice maker, and it deserves its own attention beyond the Clean cycle. Because it clips on and off, it's easy to detach for a proper hand wash with warm, soapy water every time you do a deep clean โ something you can't easily do with a fixed reservoir. Rinse it thoroughly afterward so no soap residue ends up in your ice.
While the tank is off, check the ice-level sensor window on the unit and the tank's contact points, where the tank connects electrically to the base. A film of mineral scale or water spots here can occasionally interfere with the sensor reading the tank correctly, which may show up as the machine thinking the tank is empty when it isn't. Wipe the sensor window and contacts gently with a soft, dry cloth โ avoid soaking them.
